A Holistic Approach to Learning
Salmonberry Academy gives children ages 3-5 the opportunity to explore nature, art, reading, writing, mathematics, and natural science while participating in community-building in authentic, meaningful ways. We offer a holistic approach that honors children’s individual needs for learning, moving, playing, and nurturing.
Early Childhood Education
Salmonberry Academy is a blend of Reggio and Montessori teaching philosophies and has been providing early childhood education in Scappoose since 2019 to ages 3 to 5 years old. Class sizes are limited to 10 students. We are a preschool recorded program with the state of Oregon, housed within the Saint Wenceslaus Church. Morning classes are Monday through Friday 8 to 11:45 AM. Afternoon classes are available too!

Support for Communities
Education happens within the context of a larger community. Our approach extends beyond the school to help ensure students have the necessary support to do their best learning.
Our school is named after the Salmonberry, the first to ripen in spring. Local indigenous people still visit to circle and offer prayers and songs of protection. Salmonberry watershed is in danger of becoming an over-exposed resource. I chose this name in hopes to bring awareness to the sacredness of Salmonberry watershed — where you can still drink water fresh from the spring that feeds the lake.
“Salmonberry Academy has been teaching our children since 2018. The kindness and flexibility of Teacher Kim has been a cornerstone of our children’s education. We are so grateful our kids were able to experience a hands-on, Montessori-based education with a lot of attention and care to individual needs. Cannot recommend enough!”
— Katie Leigh
“Kim is such an amazing teacher. She is very attentive to each individual child’s needs, abilities and areas for improvement. She’s constantly thinking of how to make learning even more fun for her class. The art and discovery activities used really helps the kids to be engaged in what they’re learning and the world around them. I can’t recommend Salmonberry Academy enough!”
— Devin Drabandt
“Teacher Kim is simply the best! Since joining Salmonberry my kids have enjoyed activities beyond the classroom like nature walks, local field trips and even submitted numerous art pieces to the county fair. She has helped each child foster a love of nature, art, and themselves in all that she does. Thank you Kim for helping teach the youngest generation of young thinkers and makers!”
